So Many San Francisco Activities

San Francisco continues to rank as one of the most visited cities in North America. This is a cutting-edge, progressive city rich in arts, music, culture, architecture, landscape, and a variety of activities and attractions to suit just about any personality. As soon as youíve booked your flights to San Francisco, start planning your itinerary right away to ensure youíll make the most of your visit.

The city is nestled among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is bordered by a stunning coastline to the west, ancient redwood forests to the north and the California desert region to the south. The San Francisco Bay rounds out this perfect geographical location with its breathtaking beauty and wealth of water-based activities. The Bay is also home to 14 small islands and is home to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The nearby Napa and Sonoma regions boast enchanting vineyards and exciting entertainment options.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a definite must-see for first-time visitors to the city. This is the city’s most iconic landmark, featured in countless photographs, posters, postcards, and souvenirs. The best advice is to schedule time to walk or cycle across the bridge. If you don’t get a chance to cross the bridge, you’ll still have numerous options to spot it in the distance while enjoying other activities. The best places from which to view the bridge include the Hyde Street Pier (near Ghirardelli Square), Pier 39 (on a clear day), the top of Coit Tower (on Telegraph Hill), from a ferry, or from the Marin Headlands. The Marin Headlands offer a unique view of the bridge from a perspective many visitors don’t get to experience.

Golden Gate Park is another versatile option. This enormous city park spans over 3 miles in length and more than 1000 square acres of enchanting gardens, world-class museums, and many other attractions. Some of the park’s more popular attractions include the California Academy of Sciences, the San Francisco Aquarium, the famous Japanese Tea Gardens, the Tulip Garden, the Rose Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, and the world-famous De Young Museum. Golden Gate Park is the perfect place to spend the day enjoying a picnic, flying a kite, rollerblading, sightseeing, jogging, or simply relaxing and watching the show.

Another San Francisco icon, the city’s historic cable car system, is the last of its kind in existence. At one time there were 22 cable car lines, currently only three remain. Two of the cable car lines, the Powell/Hyde and the Powell/Mason lines, depart near Powell and Market streets, just off Union Square. Don’t let the long lines here turn you off, they may look menacing but actually move rather quickly as each car holds about 65 passengers. Both of these cable car lines meander generally toward Fisherman’s Wharf. The third line is the California/Van Ness line. This trip will take you through the Financial District to the top of Nob Hill, home of the city’s most upscale hotels and nightclubs. For the most stunning views of the entire city, ride to the 19th floor of the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel and visit the Top of the Mark for an entirely unforgettable experience.

The climate in San Francisco is usually mild all year, but this is not a typical hot and sunny California city. Be prepared for cold, rainy weather, wind, and fog – these are always part of an authentic San Francisco experience. The city offers countless locations for escaping the wet weather, with live music venues, incredible dining, boutiques, bookstores, wine bars and microbreweries, galleries, museums, theaters, and much more.

The most defining characteristic of San Francisco today is the city’s vibrant, dynamic personality and its tolerance, and even celebration, of all lifestyles and interests. This is what makes it such an unforgettable destination for people from around the world.
